Misfiring Japan Overcome Taiwan in Women’s Asian Cup

A winning start was secured by Japan as a 2–0 victory was recorded over Taiwan in their opening match of the Women’s Asian Cup in Perth. Despite dominant possession and relentless pressure, finishing issues were exposed by the tournament favourites.

The contest was largely controlled by the Japan women’s national football team, with almost 90 percent possession being enjoyed and close to 30 shots being attempted. However, repeated chances were squandered as Taiwan’s defence remained compact and disciplined.

The breakthrough was finally delivered in the 61st minute when Bayern Munich midfielder Momoko Tanikawa found the net after sustained pressure. A late header in stoppage time was added by substitute Kiko Seike to confirm the result.

No shots on target were managed by the Taiwan women’s national football team, yet a spirited performance was produced, highlighted by an outstanding display from goalkeeper Wang Yu-ting, through whom several clear chances were denied.

The match was played in extreme heat, with temperatures climbing to 36°C, further testing both sides. While three points were secured, sharper finishing was acknowledged as a necessity by coach Nils Nielsen as Japan continue their campaign in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, where a third title is being pursued.
